Our Pride

"Steeped in history, this Tuscan gem exudes style and romance. Friendly, interesting owners look after you impeccably. Immersed in the hilly heart of the city, this narrow, elegant four-storey palazzo on Piazza San Giovanni sits right by the gothic Baptistery. Local owners, Giovanni and his mum Cinzia, passionate and knowledgeable about all things Sienese, have cunningly restored this building. Modern design rubs shoulders happily with centuries of intriguing history (a Pope, famous authors, artists and architects have all stayed). Venture deep below the building and piazza to a stone cellar, to find a medieval aqueduct – a secret path once used by Pope Alexander VII. Throw open the bedroom windows (Italian film star style) for jaw-dropping views out to San Domenico and a puzzle of terracotta rooftops. Interiors hum with ancient beams, original artwork and some good modern furniture; bathrooms are snazzy - choose from a freestanding claw foot tub set on 17th-century tiles or a rain shower with a delightful glimpse of the Basilica. A choice of breakfast menus will fuel you for your adventures; pick up a map from the welcoming reception area and step outside into the thick of it"

Unique History

Among others, a famous Pope (Alessandro VII) and two world-known architects (Francesco di Giorgio Martini and Le Corbusier) have set foot in this marvelous building, notified by the Minister of Fine Arts and Unesco Heritage site. There is even an underground secret passageway which once led to the Cathedral and that you can still visit today, a real window to medieval life.

Il Battistero Siena is not an hotel. It is a guest house run by the family who like to transmit what it is like to live in a medieval city today: a mix between ancient and modern.

We will treat you as our visitors and will make you feel at home, looking after you and suggesting the best places and events to not be missed. Above all we will help you experience the city, so that you will not merely be a tourist but one of us.

In the world of hospitality, this is a new way to experience the art of receiving people. Our philosophy is simple: to make guests feel at home in comfortable and stimulating surroundings; to make something small and refined; to create a new meaning of hospitality.

Il Battistero Siena is the perfect place for those who do not seek ostentatious luxury and one who does appreciate proper research and attention to detail.

We are a Siennese family who has lived in Tuscany since 1300 approximately.

The owner of Il Battistero is Maddalena and her family settled here in the 14th century when ancestors came here from Volterra.

Our coat of arms is represented by two rampant lions (strength, courage and nobility) on a “capo d’Angiò” (a blue head with three gold lilies, ordered in band and alternate from the four teeth).

Our ancestors chose a beautiful location on top of a hill and built a wonderful complex over the centuries: Lucerena (“serene light”), from where you can see Siena, Larderello, Cecina, Volterra, San Gimignano and Florence: a watercolor of the Tuscan countryside. They started a big farm, producing olives, vineyards, wood, marble (the so-called "giallo della Montagnola", part of which was used for the construction of Siena’s Cathedral and its marble floors). The property has never changed ownership since the 14th century.

It's incredible how here, in Lucerena, in the mid 20th century, while a farmer was plowing a field, the plow fell down and a wonderful Etruscan tumb appeared. It seems that the area hides a big Etruscan necropolis, but research hasn't been made yet.

They had other properties in the best location of the city center of Siena and we have decided to start converting them giving our guests the possibility to feel the real Siena. The first example of this process has been Il Battistero Siena, opened in mid 2014.

Breakfast is served every morning from 8:00 to 10:30 in the “Giovanni di Duccio” room.

With prior request, it could be served earlier or later.

If you have booked the Santa Caterina room, the Pope Alessandro VII room or the Francesco di Giorgio Martini room you can also choose to have breakfast served in the room so that you can taste this delicious breakfast whilst overlooking the Cathedral or Siena’s dainty rooftops.
We are proud to offer our guests the very best location, nestled in the center of Siena and perfect for visting the city.

Il Battistero Siena is situated at N.13 of the breath-taking and pictoresque Piazza San Giovanni, heart of medieval Siena.

The square is the square of the Baptistery, the back of Siena’s Cathedral. Not by chance many illustrious people have called this building home, amazed by the beauty of its surroundings.

Piazza San Giovanni is protected by UNESCO. The facade of Il Battistero Siena is among the most beautiful in Siena and it is registered at the Ministry of Fine Arts for its sheer beauty.

We guarantee that it’s impossible to find a better location in the heart of Siena for your visit.
